What to do when you don’t land the job

Didn’t land that job you had your hopes pinned on? Let’s face it, rejection sucks but it’s an important part of life and learning to use it to your advantage is one of the most valuable lessons you can ever learn.

Michael Jordan’s famous quote makes a valid point:
“I missed more than 9000 shots in my career. 26 times I was trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over again in my life, and that is why I succeed.”

Essentially, it’s the failures in our lives such as missing that shot or not getting a particular job that provide us with the most growth and opportunity to better ourselves. View not getting the job as a learning curve and realise that every moment of rejection and failure is a crucial stepping stone to your final destination.

So, let’s cut to the chase – Here’s four key things to help you use the situation to your advantage!

1. Seek feedback
The best thing you can do after a failed job interview is to seek feedback. Feedback allows you to understand where you went wrong and what you can improve on for next time.

2. Embrace the feedback
It’s one thing to receive feedback but another to actually embrace it. Really take on board the feedback you’ve been given and work out ways you can fix up the things you did wrong. This means you’ll be an improved version of yourself for your next interview, and eventually (if not the next time) you’ll absolutely nail it!

3. Be resilient
Resilience is one of the most important attributes you can develop as a person. It’s essentially your ability to adapt to stress and challenging situations, including the rejection of not getting a job! Being resilient will enable you to most effectively embrace the feedback given to you, and puts you in the right mind frame to improve yourself for the future.

4. Stay motivated
An important part of resilience is the ability to stay motivated. It’s normal to feel emotional after not getting offered the position you may have really wanted but don’t let your disappointment bring you down. Keep putting yourself out there and remember that this is a valuable learning curve and a small stepping stone forming a part of your journey.
